Singapore's Oversea-Chinese Banking Corporation (OCBC) has unveiled an Android application that lets users scan barcodes to obtain billing details and make payments from their accounts.
The bank says its 'scan and pay' feature is a first for Singapore, enabling customers to use their Android handset camera to scan barcodes on bills instead of keying in invoice numbers. Biller details can be stored on the phone for future payments.
SingTel, StarHub, M1 and Singapore Power are among the major billing organisations covered by the system, with more being added.
The app also lets users view bank account transactions and balances, track credit card payments, transfer funds and locate ATMs and branches.
Pranav Seth, head, e-business, global consumer financial services, OCBC, says: "Recognising that our customers' expectations grow in tandem with what technology can offer, we are constantly evolving our banking channels with the latest technology and design innovations to deliver fast, simple and convenient services."
The banks has been offering mobile banking services for five years. It says demand for the channel is surging - tripling the volume of downloads for the past year and doubling the customer base annually.
