The firm has partnered with start-up Bump Technologies on the new feature for its free app, which requires users to log in to their PayPal account, enter the payment details and then bump their iPhone against the recipient's handset.

The upgraded app also includes a tool for easily splitting bills and calculating tips, a feature to request money from people and an alert system to remind users of upcoming bills that need to be paid.

Osama Bedier, VP, platform and emerging technology, PayPal, says: "Today, you leave the house with three critical things: your phone, your wallet and your keys. PayPal Send Money lets consumers access their wallets through their phones. Because with PayPal, the wallet lives in the cloud - the mobile phone is just one device customers can use to access it."
