Tesco Bank says it is looking for "bright, talented and customer-focused people" to join its banking operations and general insurance divisions.

Around 1000 of the jobs are being created in Newcastle with the opening of a new customer services centre for the insurance unit later this year. Another 800 roles will be filled at a centre in Glasgow serving the banking operations.

The careers site lets people search and apply for jobs, providing details of the available roles, training opportunities and benefits.

The supermarket rebranded its personal finance unit to Tesco Bank in October and has laid out plans to extend the business from a collection of disparate products to that of a full-service retail bank.

Meanwhile, another new entrant hoping to take on established high street players is facing a setback, according to Reuters.

Walton & Co, brainchild of bank-bashing Panmure Gordon analyst Sandy Chen, has abandoned plan for a £200 million initial public offering after a "muted" response and will now raise cash privately.
