Matt Rowsell, head of business development at RBS WorldPay, says that contactless payments are one of the emerging technology projects at the bank division. The focus now is getting a contactless payments service running on further buses in Liverpool as well as on buses in London, he says.

Public transportation system is a popular launching pad for contactless payments. Last year the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) in Bolton launched a trial of an Oyster-style pre-paid contactless transit card that uses technology developed by e-money start-up sQuidcard.

The tap-and-go service is used for bus journeys operated by Arriva Manchester.
