Italian mobile operator PosteMobile has implemented technology from Gemalto to enable customers of BancoPosta to securely carry out payment transactions using their mobile phones.
The Gemalto portal enables customers of BancoPosta - the retail banking arm of the Italian post office - to pay bills, send telegrams and faxes, top up their balances and wire money from accounts and prepaid credit cards, using their handset.
PosteMobile - which like BancoPosta is part of the Poste Italiane group - was launched in November 2007 to offer mobile banking services and is now used by over 200,000 BancoPosta customers.
"We appreciate the high level of support Gemalto provided," says Roberto Giacchi, PosteMobile CEO. "Today, we are placing our trust in their service management solution again, to bring increased simplicity and convenience to our subscribers. Our goal is to transform the mobile phone into a real e-wallet, easy to use, anytime, anywhere."
Philippe Vallée, EVP, telecommunications business unit, Gemalto, adds: "With this solution, we are effectively putting secure digital credentials into the hands of PosteMobile subscribers that will give them the freedom to pay quickly and safely."
A report from Celent earlier this year
predicted mobile banking adoption rates will rise to 25% in Italy by 2010.
