David Lister, currently chief information officer (CIO) at Reuters, is joining Royal Bank of Scotland as chief architect.
An RBS spokeswoman told Finextra that Lister will join the bank next month.
Lister will work in the group's so-called 'manufacturing unit', which develops and maintains the infrastructure and technology supporting branches, ATMs, Internet and telephone banking services, mortgage processing and money transmission.
The unit also supports the front office operations of the group's various brands, including NatWest and insurance outfits Churchill and Direct Line.
It is thought Lister will be charged with consolidating and streamlining the group's back office technology operations in order to cut costs.
Lister joined Reuters as CIO in 2004 after a spell as director of UK high street retailer Boots.
At Reuters he led the vendor's 'Fast Forward' business transformation and cost reduction programme, overseeing the outsourcing of the information group's internal IT infrastructure and the transfer of 300 employees and 200 IT contractors to Fujitsu Services.
