MasterCard says it is teaming up with pre-paid card outfit Altair Financial Services to give away limited edition contactless cards at next week's UK music awards ceremony, the Brits.
All table ticket holders and MasterCard-invited balcony ticket holders will receive the exclusive limited edition pre-paid PayPass card with their ticket for the event, which takes place on Wednesday 20 February at Earls Court in London.
Each of the 5350 cards distributed will be pre-loaded with £10 but cannot be topped up.
At the event table guests will be able to use the card to purchase a USB stick containing the Brits Hits album from kiosks located on the ground floor, while balcony ticket holders will be able to use the PayPass card to purchase food and drink from two bars equipped with contactless card readers
To make a purchase customers tap their cards on a specially-equipped terminal that utilises a radio frequency chip to complete the transaction. The value of the purchase will then be deducted from the card's balance.
Lee Britton, CEO, Altair, says: "Contactless prepaid cards have notable benefits for event venues, including entry control and a simplified rapid payment facility."
Altair says that people given the cards will be able to use them anywhere that accepts PayPass contactless payments.
MasterCard partnered with Altair on a similar giveaway at the Swarovski Fashion Rocks event for the Prince's Trust last year.
