Coomer was most recently group executive, business and technology services for Westpac where he was responsible for IT, e-business, outsourcing governance and all back-office operations and support. He retired from the bank in July this year.

Prior to his post at Westpac, Coomer spent four years as chief information officer at National Australia Bank, where he was responsible for leading all IT activities in Asia, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, the UK and the US.

He has also worked for IBM Global Services, Ansett Transport Industries and Rockwell International.

In his new post Coomer is charged with strengthening EDS's market share in the global financial services industry, which accounts for over $4 billion a year across 30 countries.

In addition to the global role, EDS says Coomer has also been named EVP for the Asia Pacific region, replacing Joe Eazor who was recently promoted to EVP of corporate strategy and business development.

Both positions report to EDS president and CEO Ron Rittenmeyer from 1 November.

Commenting on the appointment, Rittenmeyer says: "As a former CIO and client, Michael understands how to leverage EDS' scale and capabilities to provide innovative IT solutions to clients."
