OnePulse is set to be launched across London in September. The card features a standard chip and PIN payment system, Oyster card functionality and Visa's 'wave and pay' contactless payment technology.

Elizabeth Chambers, chief marketing officer, Barclaycard, says there has been a surge in the number of retailers and other stores planning to adopt the contactless technology for payments in recent months.

"Cashless payments are starting to become a reality," says Chambers. "They're fast, secure, and a fantastic way to streamline your day - no more waiting in queues to pay for small ticket items."

Cardholders will be able to use the contactless technology on the card to pay for purchases under £10 at over 1000 retail outlets, including Coffee Republic, Threshers, Books Etc, YO! Sushi, Eat, Krispy Kreme and the Science Museum.

Barclaycard expects OnePulse to be accepted at several thousand retail outlets by the end of the year.

The bank won a deal last December with TranSys - the consortium which runs the Oyster card system - that gives it the exclusive rights to place Oyster on its Visa cards for the next three years.
