The Swiss bank says it has leased a unit at One Raffles Quay to house the new support staff. The new facility has a capacity for 1400 staff, of which 900 positions will be filled by year-end 2007. Credit Suisse says the majority of staff will be local hires.

The bank currently employs 2200 staff at two locations in Singapore - including 800 at a back office support centre it opened in 2004. The latest move will increase the number of Credit Suisse staff in the city state to almost 3600.

Thomas Sanzone, chief information officer, Credit Suisse, says the new facilities will greatly enhance the bank's current global support operations.

"We will continue to enjoy the benefits of the world-class IT infrastructure that exists in Singapore and, more importantly, further our access to the excellent talent pool that is available to us here," says Sanzone.

Reports surfaced earlier this year that Credit Suisse was plannig to shift 5000 IT, back office and administrative jobs to cheap offshore centres in eastern Europe, Singapore and India as part of global cost cutting programme.
