HSBC Hong Kong to issue Digipass authentication tokens

HSBC in Hong Kong has begun distribution of Vasco Digipass GO3 authentication tokens in an effort to protect Internet banking customers from phishing and other online fraud.

With over 870,000 Internet banking customers, HSBC is the largest Internet bank in Hong Kong, serving over 60% of the online banking users in the territory.

The bank says the Vasco tokens will be issued to all online customers.

Hong Kong's banks have been instructed to introduce two-factor authentication to secure online banking transactions by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority.

HSBC also has plans to roll out Digipass to all online@hsbc customers in Asia.

The implementation of the technology in Asia Pacific follows an earlier roll out to business customers of HSBC in Brazil.
