The new service will allow all Internet banking customers to view and search for specific statement entries by date, amount or payment, back to July 2002. Customers will also be able to order specific paper statements free of charge.

Matthew Timms, Internet banking director, Lloyds TSB, says: "This service will make things even easier for customers, by allowing them to search through records dating back almost three years."

As part of the service customers can opt to stop receiving paper statements and the bank says it will dedicate 10,000 trees to the first customers who sign up.

The trees have been planted in Northumberland in the North of England with the help of Future Forests, a company that plants trees on behalf of individuals and companies in order to offset their carbon emissions.

UK bank HSBC operates a similar scheme and makes a contribution towards new saplings at the Forest of Marston Vale in Bedfordshire for every Web banking customer that opts to access statements via the Internet rather than by post.
