Computershare raises stake in Russian registrar to 45%

Computershare has acquired a further 15% stake in Russia's National Registry Company (NRC), taking its total holding in the registrar to 45%.

NRC maintains three million shareholder accounts for joint stock companies and mutual funds and delivers registry services to 400 clients across Russia.

The new stock was purchased from the International Finance Corporation and makes Computershare the largest shareholder in NRC.

Jeff Sainsbury, general manager at Computershare and a director of NRC, believes the large number of registrars in the the Russian market - over 70 compared to just five or six in the UK - is unsustainable and a consolidation of the market is inevitable.

"Our significant stake in one of Russia's leading registry businesses places us in the optimal position to participate fully in any movement going forward," says Sainsbury.
