Initially available for the iPhone, the BS Mpos offer works across both chip and mag-stripe cards. The bank says an equivalent app will 'shortly' be available for smartphones equipped with Android and other operating systems.

Banco Sabadell joins a small but growing roster of banks to partner with Mpos device makers in an effort to muscle in on the mobile point-of-sale market. In the past month alone, Lloyds Bank and Banco Santander have struck deals with Monitise and iZettle respectively.

Albert Figueras, director of credit cards and consumer finance at Banco Sabadell, says: "Integrating the POS terminal into the smartphone, not just reduces costs, but it also offers several added-value choices, such as the possibility of accessing, via a single device, the Mpos terminal and BS Mobile to manage business transactions."
