As of September 14, 2019, merchants will have to adapt to Strong Customer Authentication (SCA), which aims to increase payment security and protect sensitive consumer payment data.

PSD2 requires that SCA is applied to all electronic payments and transactions - including proximity, remote and mobile-payments - within the European Economic Area (EEA).

With PSD2 the onus is on the many parties in the payments ecosystem to improve security and reduce their fraud rates and while merchants have had to manage the complexity of CNP fraud risk prevention, many issuers have not been as closely involved.

As some of the risk for accepting payments shifts to the issuers, a new focus on Transaction Risk Analysis will be key to ensure minimal fraud losses and reduced friction.
