Walmart, for one, are four-square behind EMV. Speaking at last week''s Smart card Alliance summit Walmart's John Drechny described EMV as an opportunity for retail payments executives to be leaders and move their organisations’ technology forward "in the right ways". In fact, Walmart has for some time had 100% of its payment system hardware equipped to accept EMV chip and PIN: Wal-Mart executive calls for US move to Chip and PIN.

Being an old lag, I can tell you that Taurus stood for Transfer and Automated Registration of Unceritified Stock (and with a monicker like that it's no surprise that it fell apart), while Crest had no acronym. I was at the press conference when the Bank of England's Pen Kent laid out the plans. I seem to remember him saying that they just wanted a bright and shiny name, like the toothpaste. Then again, it was a long time ago and my memory might be playing tricks on me.

Hyperlink now included. NB, Finextra often posts links where appropriate. On this occasion not "laziness or incompetence", just an oversight on a busy news day.

Got to agree with Andy on this. The only thing Visa's contactless Olympics project demonstrated was how far away from a cashless society we truly are. Furthermore, the reputational damage to Team Visa from its ludicrous branding strategy at the Park - 'Proud to accept only Visa' - is incalcuable.

Nick, not sure we overstated Forrester's case, although we did paraphrase. The standfirst takes this quote from Benjamin's own blog on the report: "Mobile banking is a much bigger deal than cash machines (ATMs), credit cards or home-based online banking".

Glad to hear you have no axe to grind with NAB.
Omission of NAB by name in news copy a minor oversight, but inferred through reference to all of of Australia's top four banks and archive links. Westpac's woes 'amusing', since they coincided with the RBA report.
After NAB's last bout of downtime earlier this month, one of the wags on the news desk suggested that Aussia bank glitches had become the new norm, and maybe we should start reporting only glitch-free operations as news.

Neil, you seem to have it in for NAB. Any vested interests you'd like to share? As for research, have you checked the related news items?.

The news desk is taking a well-earned break, but the conversation continues elsewhere on the site. All blogs and comments posted over this period will appear as per usual. I'll be keeping an eye on things over the festive season to make sure nothing goes awry.

Pat, from the Commbank PR: "Security is always top priority for Commonwealth Bank, and Commbank Kaching is no different. Password encryption technology ensures that a lost or stolen phone will not enable someone to access a user’s personal banking details. The app is authorised to be used on only one handset, and no personal banking information is stored on the phone. Receivers of payments are also protected, with all un-retrieved funds being credited to the payer after 14 days."
