So ironic that the banks that offloaded much of their own ATM estate are the ones now demanding the reduction! Still, in some areas there are too many ATMs so this new balanced proposal should appease (almost) everyone.

You don't mention the stranglehold the duopoly in the cards space have over the UK market and now one of them also own the central infrastructure for real time. Competition is what was needed and the regulator was sleeping on the job to allow that to happen.

This would be newsworthy if the super-rich behemoth that is Apple were to refund the non-profit the massive fees it will collect for the transactions.

If that was the "simple" version then blockchain has no future.

If something is that complicated to explain - how can anyone still believe the general public will ever see it as a credible alternative to today's payment methods? At the mall, the $100 bill sounds SO much easier to use than all that fuss.

Interesting many comments on this article are all about 'me and my requirements' (a typical problem in banking). The readers of finextra and not representative of the general public and certainly unlikely to represent the demographic of people who NEED a branch. The UK banks already use the post office anyway to give coverage in areas where they don't have branches. So maybe the answer is more a social solution so the majority are serviced with online methods but certain areas of society are not excluded.

Nothing new here and the story should be why are there online stores still out there not mandating CV2 and checking AVS?

"capable of performing all banking operations previously confined to bricks and mortar branches" - really? I hardly think these people will be accepting business cash deposits or a host of other traditional counter services. Let's face the truth here - they have been retrained as salespeople with a shiny new iPad.
