Whilst I agree this is a poor decision by Barclays, I also think people shouldn’t think of Banks as utilities. If Barclays customers don’t like this, move to another bank using the (utility like) switching service!

Without taking sides on the interchange debate, you don’t have to go back many years to when there were 35k free machines and very few complaints. With cash declining has anyone actually considered how many free ATMs is the right number?

And in so doing the government, by making the banks subsidise these accounts, kill off a whole industry trying to serve this sector with fairly priced simple accounts.  Ho Hum.
