Since Santander seem unable to seamlessly transfer their own internet banking customers from their existing system to their new one without having to re-register any chance of them transferring customers from another Bank seamlessly was a non starter.

I'm confused. Why would you want to run an NFC trial with a phone that doesn't support NFC? Far easier just to make your debit cards contactless or do a trial on phones that do support NFC.
Surely the only additional benefits of using a mobile phone to make contactless payments is where the NFC is integrated and you use the phone software and network capabilities to provide enhanced security or additional services.
Anyone who believes the RBS hype that customers need only carry their smartphone to make payments is going to be sadly dissappointed.

A better idea might be a supply of windup tape recorders to record conversations with bank chief executives?

Not necessarily sensible to fund yourself in a currency your recievables aren't in but then it looks as if J P Morgan might be in line to hedge this for them.

This seems sensible but lets hope that the system is capable of holding any Mobile number (e.g. non UK ones as some customers will have a mobile that isn't from the UK). I also hope that unlike the Barclays scheme it's possible to link more than one mobile to an account number so joint account customers can each send and receive funds.
Finally security of the database will be paramount as any database of accounts and associated mobile phones will be a goldmine for fraudsters.

Development of an iPhone app? Don't waste money on a book - "Siri I need an App for that"!

First of all congratulations to those who did the work. Good to see it' Android and the big positive is that I can scroll down a story easily. The big question though is "Do I need an App for that?" or just a custom UI to the web page. This is true not only of the Finextra App but of Bank Apps in general. Unless they add something more than a new UI to the web experience what is the point of them? Apps should offer customisation, interaction, personalisation and ideally have some features that work off line. When they transcend the web experience and offer something useful where ever you have your phone then we'll have something really great that "just works".

So will NYCE cardholders need Chip and Pin cards or will this open up the potential for more cloned cards in UK ATMs?

Don't you mean "startup" rather than "upstart"?
