Sacked by facebook status update!

  0 2 comments

I came across a web page yesterday that I had to share.

Someone with 2 weeks left on their 6 month probabtionary period at work updated their face book status and forgot that they'd added their boss as one of their friends. The face book status was quite derogatory and ended up with the girl being told not to come back to work via a facebook status update!.

There was also a similar case on Twitter a couple of months ago.

This highlights the fact that the internet is not private and you should be careful what you say! The simple rule of thumb, also applicable for sending emails over the company exchange server, is if you wouldn't be happy for someone to print out that message/facebook update/tweet and put it up in a public place i.e. the notice board at work then don't make that comment live.

The link to the article is here, though be warned the girl's status update does contain a couple of swear words so it may not be 100% work safe.

Update: The BBC covers the story here with a video of the ex-employee. Bless, she's only 16 years old, I guess that's another one of life's lessons learned the hard way for her!
