The Times produced an interesting piece on the glass ceiling recently – Camilla Cavendish wrote that the concept is actually in women’s heads and that they actually fear promotion as males and females are programmed to want different things. She
cites a new book by Susan Pinker which says that biologically, baby boys are exposed to testosterone which makes them more daring and aggressive as opposed to girls whose oestrogen makes them calmer, more empathic and more likely to look for meaning in their
jobs as opposed to wanting to dominate. She also suggests that because of this, the more choice we have, the more it could increase the sexual division of labour. It’s to be hoped that women can strike a balance and that while they may not be looking to dominate,
they can successfully hold authority and empathy at the same time.
