Barclays expands WAP banking

Barclays has launched a WAP service combining banking, credit card and sharedealing over a single mobile portal on the Vodafone network.

New additions to the Barclays WAP service include banking and Barclaycard credit card services as well as enhancements to the existing WAP sharedealing service.

Barclays customers will also be able to access European portal Vizzavi to find the latest news, TV & radio listings as well as games, weather, travel and sport information. Mobile users in search of a Barclays ATM will be able to tap into Vizzavi Find & Seek, a location-based WAP service to get directions to their nearest machine.

Simon Newman, Barclays online banking director, comments: "As mobile phone technologies become increasingly sophisticated, we believe that more and more people will take advantage of being able to carry out their banking using their mobile phone or pocket PCs."

He points to a recent NOP poll commissioned by Barclays which indicates that six out of ten UK citizens believe the whole nation will be using mobile phones to bank by 2006.

WAP sharedealing was first launched by Barclays in November 2000 and is now used by one in 15 of Barclays Stockbrokers online customer base, claims the bank.
