Working in teams of up to six, applicants have until 7 December to deliver their pitches, explaining how they would use the distributed ledger, what business they would apply it to and what products they would create.

Says the challenge's website: "So tell us how you’d make society better for people in the UK by coming up with an idea that has Blockchain’s distributed ledger technology at its heart. Think big. Be creative. And showcase the skills you could bring to our Projects, Data and Technology teams."

Teams will get the chance to visit the central bank and meet members of its projects, data and technology teams. Winners in their first, second or penultimate years of study will secure six-week paid internships, while those in their final year will get fast-tracked to the bank's graduate programme assessment centre.
