Swapping his cockpit for another cramped spot, Button spent a day in the build up to Christmas hidden in the specially designed ATM in a Santander branch in Windsor.

Unsuspecting customers who pressed the machine's Jenson 'Button' got a shock as a hatch opened up to reveal the former world champion bearing £100 in cash and a hamper.

The campaign has proved a marketing hit, with the accompanying video getting more than 1.2 million views on YouTube.

Last year Canada's TD Bank pulled off a similar stunt, turning its ATMs into 'Automated Thanking Machines' that distributed gifts to customers.

Shows that innovative thinking can also be "inside the box". Great stuff and I hope one of many varieties of ways in which banks start to become friends with customers once more. I am not sure my heart would take it if it's always people leaping out at you when you least suspect it :-).
