Luxembourg's bank-led mobile payments scheme Digicash has begun piloting in-store beacon devices that let customers use their handsets to make Sepa credit transfers straight from their current accounts.
The Digicash Beacons use Bluetooth low energy to automatically transmit required payment-related data to customers' smartphones.
At the point of sale, the user opens the Digicash app and places their handset by the beacon. Details of the transaction are displayed on the phone and the customer enters a PIN to initiate a Sepa credit transfer.
The app also works with NFC and QR code technology, automatically providing the customer with the best user experience based on their phone's features.
Local banks BCEE, Post and BIL and several retailers are currently testing the service ahead of a planned wide-scale roll out in the second half of the year.
