American Express is integrating with Apple's new mobile wallet app, Passbook, enabling cardholders to view (although not carry out) transactions on their iPhones.
Integrated into the latest iOS 6, the Passbook app puts things like store cards, airline boarding passes and concert tickets into a simple wallet display on the device screen.
AmEx has confirmed to VentureBeat that it has moved early to take advantage of the new feature. Cardholders will be able to receive notifications when transactions are made on their accounts, check balances and get customer service information.
Although payments are not yet on the agenda, VentureBeat speculates that AmEx could use Passbook to alert customers to nearby merchant offers, check suspicious transactions and offer real-time redemption of rewards points.
