Hackers take Steam gamers' card details

Intruders have hit online gaming outfit Steam and accessed a database containing user information, including encrypted credit card data.

Steam owner Valve Software says that during an investigation into an attack on Sunday that saw forums "defaced", it also discovered that a database had been compromised.

The database contained user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, e-mail and billing addresses and encrypted credit card information.

However, Gabe Newell, CEO, Valve, insists: "We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked."

There is no sign of fraudulent card use but Steam users should keep an eye on their statements and all forum users are being told to change their passwords.
