Available to people who are both Hong Kong 3 subscribers and Citibank Visa credit card holders, the 3 Citi Wallet app works with NFC-enabled Android handsets, while iPhone owners can also use it by attaching stickers to their phones.

To make contactless payments of up to HK$1000, users sign into the app with a password and tap their handset against one of the 9000-odd compatible Visa payWave terminals on the island.

The wallet sends out instant SMS alerts when transaction are completed and lets users view their payment history. Customers can also set their preferences to automatically receive location-based merchant offers.

Citi and 3 Hong Kong are charging HK$18 a month for the wallet, although customers can sign up for a three month free trial.

Christine Lam, country business manager, Citibank Global Consumer Banking, Hong Kong, says: "This revolutionary '3 Citi Wallet' turns a smartphone into a wallet, providing unprecedented payment flexibility and convenience, giving our customers an unsurpassed shopping experience with bank grade security."
