Banco Santander and Movistar will run a small trial of the technology in the Santiago area before a country-wide roll out involving 5000 compatible payment terminals by the end of the year.

Oberthur will deploy and manage the service over-the-air (OTA), provide NFC SIM cards, a Mobile PayPass payment application and a digital wallet allowing customers to activate their cards and view their transaction history from their Samsung Galaxy S3 phones.

Banco Santander's MasterCard card will be fully secured by the NFC SIM, which Oberthur says offers stronger security than the mag-stripe cards currently used in Chile.

Paula Figueroa, marketing director, Movistar, says: "This joint trial with Banco Santander and Oberthur Technologies represents a real step forward in the deployment of NFC in Chile, and more generally across Latin America."

Magdalena Assef, head, mobile payments, Banco Santander, adds: "Banco Santander is dedicated to providing the highest level of security to its customers by leading the simultaneous migration to EMV and NFC."

Meanwhile, MasterCard, telco KPN and banks ABN Amro, ING and Rabobank have confirmed that they will begin their Dutch contactless mobiles payments pilot in the city of Leiden in September. The three month trial will involve around 1000 customers and 100 businesses.
