BBVA rolls out futuristic ATMs

Spanish bank BBVA has begun a nation-wide roll-out of state-of-the-art, touch screen "ATMs of the future".

The bank has been working with NCR, Fujitsu and design consultancy Ideo on the futuristic machines with iPad-style screens that display only information relevant to the transaction at hand, with cash, statements and receipts handled in and out through a single slot.

To improve security, the customer stands at 90 degrees to anyone else who may be waiting, shielded by a frosted panel.

BBVA rolled out 20 of the ATMs by the end of last year and is now stepping up the process, with 200 set to be deployed across Spain by the end of the year ahead of a push into South America and the US.

Vicente Amores, NCR global director for BBVA, says: "BBVA is constantly looking for ways to strengthen relations with its customers and the project was not how to further automate the terminal, but how to humanise the machine. The result is a new self-service device based on three qualities: simple, human, and flexible."

I must say I constantly get inspired when I see this video - it is a great proof that the mundane can be made enjoyable with a little bit of care and thought - I still feel that applying the same design principles to the tellers platform would have to have massive benefits - imagine them having quick, easy processing that was enjoyable and then see the lift in customer satisfaction from them having a great experience!

hats off to the design team on this.
