Apple Pay users given a free ride in London with MasterCard

MasterCard is giving a boost to Apple Pay adoption in the UK by offering free public transport rides across the capital for commuters who tap to pay with their iPhone.

The scheme Fare Free Mondays begins on 23 November and ends on December 14. For those who touch in and out with their Apple device on each successive Monday their fares will be refunded to a cap of £27.90.

Since Transport for London began enabling people to pay for tube, overground, DLR and tram journeys with contactless, the organisation has become the fastest growing contactless MasterCard and American Express merchant in the UK, with over one million journeys made each day.

TfL has previously warned over low battery-life on devices as if the user is unable to tap out they could be charged a maximum fare. Concerns also surround the length of time it takes to verify the payment at the barrier.

Mark Barnett, president of MasterCard UK&I says: “Now that Apple Pay has arrived we want to encourage travellers on London’s transport network to try it out and give them another convenient option to pay for their travel."

Earlier this week, UK bank TSB celebrated the arrival of Apple Pay for cardholders by promising five percent cash back on the first £100 of purchases made from Apple Pay in the run up to Christmas.
