TfL hits million contactless taps a day mark

On a single day last week travellers on London's public transport network made more than a million taps with their contactless bank cards to get around the capital.

In the six months since Transport for London began enabling people to pay for their tube, overground, DLR and tram journeys with a tap of their bank card, the organisation has become the fastest growing contactless Visa merchant in Europe, and MasterCard and American Express merchant in the UK.

TfL says 60 million journeys have been paid for via the contactless option in the past month, accounting for 14% of all pay-as-you-go journeys.

And MasterCard's Scott Abrahams says contactless usage by passengers is also having a 'halo effect' on the method and is driving significant use of the technology at other retailers.

Richard Koch, head of policy at The UK Cards Association, says: "With around one in seven of all contactless transactions in the UK now taking place on London transport, it's clear that last year's launch has given a big boost to the expansion of the technology."

While this can be seen as a success and potentially the silver bullet for the contactless technology, the dominance of London in transaction volume following its choice for the original trial is still a concern.

I hope other transport organisations will also adopt contactless and the limit increase will promote greater usage generally.

McDonalds should be the case study for any fast food organisation wishing to implement contactless adoption
