Thieves in Manchester have been recycling redundant iPod nano devices to snap photos of consumers entering their PINs at an ATM machine in a somewhat crude take on traditional skimming fraud.
The enterprising, if dumb, fraudsters used duct tape to attach the iPod to the outer housing of the ATM, applying it in conjunction with a card trapping device to record users as they entered their PINs. The thieves returned to retrieve the trapped card and recording once the customer had given up and walked away.
Given the array of advanced technology available to professional card skimming gangs, this Mancunian take on the crime is laughably low-tech.
Greater Manchester Police were not impressed by the criminal's handiwork, describing it as "not the best attempt we have seen".
