Amazon wins right to sell .pay and .buy domains

E-commerce giant Amazon has paid millions of dollars in private auctions for the right to sell domains ending in .pay and .buy.

The firm shelled out $4.6 million for the .buy generic top-level domain (gTLD), beating off competition from Google, among others, in the auction run by Icann.

It has also secured the rights to sell .pay and paid up to $10 million for .book, but lost out on .cloud to Italian firm Aruba.

Other domains to have been auctioned off ahead of a 19 November deadline include .chat, .dog, .earth, .film, .hot, .latino, .live, .online, .site, .sucks and .tennis.

Icann has given the task of operating .bank to fTLD Registry Services, a group run by the American Bankers Association, Financial Services Roundtable, and others.
