Anonymous preps Valentine's Day assault on Goldman

Goldman Sachs can expect plenty of Valentine's Day attention this year, but it won't be amorous, as hacktivist collective Anonymous gears up for an assault on the vampire squid's various social media accounts.

In a move picked up by the International Business Times, the @YourAnonNews Twitter account has urged its 883,000-odd followers to help it "destroy" Goldman's social media presence tomorrow in #OpGm.

The tweet links to a dedicated Operation Goldman Tumblr which asks sympathisers to report the bank's Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn accounts as spam. The Tumblr group also has a list of phone numbers for Goldman's offices around the world, which people are invited to make "friendly calls" to.

Last year Goldman embarked on a hunt for a social media strategist to help the poster boy for Wall Street excess build a "positive online presence". Since then the bank has become a regular tweeter, although any attack on its barren Facebook page is unlikely to cause consternation.

With a day to go until the planned assault, Twitter chatter attached to the #OpGm hashtag is muted. However, Anonymous has proved itself capable of pulling off stunts in the past, most recently leaking names, addresses and other personal information of around 4000 US bank staffers following a successful hack of a Federal Reserve Board database.
