More Barclays IT staff face chop - report

IT staff at Barclays have been sent an e-mail warning them the bank is likely to axe more jobs, according to tech wire The Register.

The e-mail, signed by tech chief Jim Ditmore, predicts 700 job cuts in 2009. However, it is not clear whether these losses are part of 1800 announced last year.

According to the Register, the latest e-mail warns that Barclays Global Retail and Commercial Banking will look to remove duplication and consolidate support functions, resulting in job losses.

The bank is talking with union Unite about the redundancies.

Says the e-mail: "We recognise that colleagues will be eager to learn more about what this means for them and, therefore, commit to working as swiftly as possible and keeping people informed along the way. We will communicate more about our plans as they progress and you can expect to hear from us within the next couple of weeks."

Last July it emerged the bank planned to cut around 1800 technology jobs in the UK over two years at its global infrastructure and service delivery (GISD) unit as it looks to offshore the work to "centres of excellence" around the world.

This was followed in January with the news that a further 158 inhouse technology staff and 250 contractors from the GISD unit would be axed.
