US operator Cellular South to launch multi-city m-payments trial

US mobile telco Cellular South is teaming with phone manufacturer Kyocera Wireless to launch a multi-city consumer trial of NFC-enabled wireless wallet technology.

Cellular South says the pilot - which kicks off of in May in Memphis, Tennessee and Jackson, Mississippi - will allow participants to use the m-payments technology at retail locations in multiple cities.

Participants will be equipped with the Kyocera Wireless handset, which is embedded with near field communication (NFC)technology. The phone will act as a "digital credit card" and customers will be able make payments by tapping the handset against a NFC-enabled reader.

The telco says it plans to complete the trial by August 2007, with an anticipated widespread consumer roll-out of the Wireless Wallet system in Q4 2007.
