New York is to be the host city for the first in a series of fintech-specific Hackathons, in which coders from the vendor community come together to develop and present new ideas and software programmes to an audience of venture capitalists.

The first event will be taking place in New York City from 6-7 April and is supported by several firms including 10gen, Betterment, Bloomberg, Caplin, Dwolla, Estimize, The FinTech Innovation Lab, OpenGamma, OANDA, OpenFin and StockTwits.

The Hackathon brings together FinTech developers and designers to develop financial products and discover new technologies. Example applications include innovations in risk management, trading, big data, retail banking, regulatory compliance, mobile payments and enterprise social.

APIs and development tools from technology partners will be made available during the Hackathon. Attendees will spend 24 hours coding, validating their ideas, networking and then demoing their hacks to a panel of FinTech VCs, executives and entrepreneurs.

Nick Gavronsky, co-organiser of the Hackathon and head of product at OpenFin, says: "There are thousands of developers working in the financial industry. Our goal is to create a community where they can connect, collaborate on promising ideas and innovate with new technologies," said

Other Fintech-specific Hackathon events are currently being planned for Toronto, London and San Francisco.

London has already played host to a financial technology hackathon organised by Seedcamp at a Google-run incubator campus in the heart of the City in April last year.
